Career Exploration and Discovery
LEAF’s Career Exploration and Discovery (CED) Program addresses the specific needs of Latinx students in East San José, providing them and their families with comprehensive career exploration and preparation resources. Our program is designed to bridge the gap between students’ academic experiences and their future career aspirations, ensuring they are prepared for meaningful, well-paying careers in Silicon Valley.
Why This Matters
Many low-income students from under-resourced schools struggle to connect their education to their future careers, leading to academic disengagement. This challenge is exacerbated by a lack of career counseling and post-high school planning. Our program combats this by providing the tools and resources students need to pursue careers that offer living wages, rather than settling for minimum-wage jobs.
What We Offer
Connections to Silicon Valley
LEAF equips students and their families with crucial information about job availability and wages in Silicon Valley, helping prevent displacement from the region. We also expose students to career pathways and build a network of Latinx professionals to serve as mentors, offering students access to the social connections vital for career mobility.
Application Preparation & Support
Our program assists students with the job application process, including cover letter and resumé development, interview preparation, and guidance on building a strong online presence. Every CED participant receives a professional headshot and coaching on how to bring their authentic selves to the job search, honoring their identities and career aspirations.
Career Pathways Exploration
LEAF works with postsecondary institutions to offer students insight into guided career pathways, including certification programs, trade opportunities, degree tracks, and graduate school options. LEAF supports students in developing their skills and resumé during college, positioning them for long-term success.
