Help Shape the Future of First-Gen Latinx Professionals – Become a LEAF Career Mentor! 🌟

At LEAF, we believe in empowering first-generation Latinx students by connecting them with professionals who can guide them in their career journeys. One way to make a lasting impact is by becoming a mentor in LEAF’s Career Exploration & Discovery Program. By offering mentorship, you help shape the future of young leaders, providing them with the insights and encouragement they need to thrive. Here are stories from two of our dedicated mentors, Evita Anaya Bryden and Jorge Casas, who have made a difference in the lives of these students.

Evita Anaya Bryden

What inspired you to become a career mentor at LEAF?
"I am a strong advocate of giving back to the community and paving the way for future Latinx leaders. I had various mentors and coaches who supported me throughout my education and career, and to this day, I think about the positive impact they had on my life. Becoming a mentor is truly one of the best gifts ever!"

What advice would you give to someone new to the role of a career mentor?
"Lean into your lived career experiences. You have so much to contribute to students navigating their career journeys. Mentoring is about affirming students’ strengths and guiding them toward their own goals."

What would you say to others who are considering becoming a career mentor but are unsure if it’s the right fit for them?
"If you are a caring adult wanting to make a positive impact in the life of a young adult, then this role is right for you!"

Jorge Casas

How has your experience as a career mentor influenced your professional development?
"My experience as a career mentor reminded me that there’s always room to help others grow, especially younger generations who are bright, full of potential, and preparing to enter the workforce."

Can you share a memorable moment or success story from your time as a career mentor?
"One memorable moment was connecting with a mentee in person on more than one occasion. Although our lives were busy, and some mentees were attending school out of the area, this particular mentee made the effort to meet in person."

In what ways do you feel you’ve made an impact on the students you’ve mentored?
"I believe I’ve made an impact by showing students that there are people who look like them, share similar experiences, and are available to offer guidance and networking opportunities."

What would you say to others considering becoming a career mentor?
"Reach out to past mentors or LEAF staff to understand what typical meetings with mentees entail. Getting materials early will help you brainstorm and prepare your approach before meeting with your mentees."

Why You Should Become a Mentor

As a mentor, you will:

  • Meet with your paired student monthly to discuss their career progress. 📅

  • Provide insights and advice about your field. 💼

  • Guide and connect students to potential career opportunities. 🌐

Your support could be the key to unlocking a student’s potential, giving them the confidence and resources to succeed in their career.
