LEAF Mentor Spotlight: Isabel Pérez

Isabel Pérez's journey is a powerful testament to resilience, determination, and the pursuit of excellence. As a first-generation college graduate, Isabel’s path through higher education has been marked by her unwavering commitment to personal growth and community empowerment.

Reflecting on her journey, Isabel shares, "Being the first in my family to graduate from college has been both a challenge and a privilege. It’s taught me the importance of perseverance and the impact that education can have on one’s life."

Isabel began her academic journey at Modesto Junior College and San Jose City College, where she earned three associate degrees in Business Administration, Psychology, and Social Science. With a strong foundation in these diverse fields, she continued her studies at San Jose State University, where she recently graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, emphasizing Human Resource Management, and a minor in Economics. Her academic achievements reflect her dedication to building a comprehensive understanding of both business and human behavior—skills she knew would be invaluable in her future career.

But Isabel’s story goes beyond academics. She has always been deeply involved in her community, using her experiences and knowledge to uplift others. "I believe in the power of community and the importance of giving back," Isabel says. "That’s why I’ve been so active in organizations like the Latina Coalition of Silicon Valley and SHRM@SJSU. It’s about creating opportunities for others and helping them navigate their own paths."

Recently, Isabel completed the Engaged Latina Leadership Activist Program (ELLA), solidifying her commitment to advocacy and leadership within her community. She also serves as the Alumni Chair for SHRM@SJSU, where she continues to mentor and guide students in their professional development.

Isabel’s journey has also led her to gain hands-on experience in the professional world. Currently, she is interning at a biotech company in Redwood City, CA, where she is applying her knowledge of human resources and business management in a real-world setting. This experience is not only enhancing her skills but also providing her with insights that she is eager to share with others. "My internship has been an eye-opening experience. It’s one thing to learn about HR in the classroom, but applying those concepts in a fast-paced industry has been invaluable. I’m excited to bring what I’ve learned back to the students I mentor."

This passion for mentorship is what brought Isabel to LEAF, where she has recently taken on the role of a mentor. As a LEAF Mentor, Isabel is dedicated to guiding students through the challenges of college life and career planning. Drawing from her own experiences, she offers valuable advice on everything from academic perseverance to navigating the professional world. "Mentorship has always been close to my heart. I know how much it would have meant to have someone guide me when I was starting out. Now, I want to be that person for someone else."

Isabel Pérez’s story is one of triumph over challenges and a deep commitment to giving back. As she continues to pursue her MBA at San Jose State University, she remains focused on her goal of empowering others to achieve their dreams. LEAF is proud to welcome Isabel as a mentor, and we are excited to see the positive impact she will undoubtedly have on the students she supports.
