LEAF Spotlight: Brandon's Journey in Combining Creativity and Compassion
Meet Brandon Cortes Cardenas, a second-year student at UC Davis and a proud participant in LEAF’s Career Exploration and Discovery (CED) program.
As the first in his family to study both art and animal science, Brandon is charting a path uniquely his own. His dream is to blend these fields in meaningful ways—providing accessible animal care for underserved communities while using his artistic talents to drive awareness and advocacy for important causes.
“I’ve always been passionate about helping others, whether it’s through my work with animals or through art,” Brandon shares. “Combining those two passions allows me to make a real difference.”

Brandon’s journey hasn’t been without challenges, but he credits LEAF for equipping him with the tools and confidence to thrive. Through workshops and personalized support, LEAF has helped him manage stress, overcome obstacles, and discover strategies for academic and personal success.
“LEAF has given me the resources and support I needed to stay motivated and overcome obstacles. I’ve learned how to advocate for myself and thrive in college,” he says.
Brandon has also connected with additional programs at UC Davis, including EOP/STEP, Aggie Jumpstart, and TRiO Scholars, each of which has provided valuable opportunities to learn, grow, and explore his passions. His experiences range from working hands-on with animals to contributing to campus projects like a mosaic mural, showcasing both his artistic and scientific talents.
A Story of Resilience and Commitment
Despite facing hurdles along the way, including navigating the demands of higher education and managing personal challenges, Brandon’s resilience and determination have been unwavering. He has embraced resources for mental health, sought accommodations when needed, and cultivated skills to advocate for himself in every aspect of his life.
“My journey hasn’t been easy, but I’ve learned that asking for help and taking advantage of the resources available to me can make all the difference,” Brandon says.
