LEAF Spotlight: James’ Vision for Success Rooted in Determination
Meet James Arteaga Carrasco, a second-year student at Evergreen Valley College, pursuing a degree in Business Administration. James is not only a dedicated student but also an active LEAF Scholar and participant in the Career Exploration and Discovery (CED) program.
Turning Dreams Into Action
James’ story begins with a passion for entrepreneurship. While still in high school, he built a small business selling refreshments and snacks to raise money, showcasing his natural talent for innovation and leadership. This early achievement set the foundation for his aspiration to become a financial analyst and, eventually, a Chief Financial Officer.
At Evergreen Valley College, James’ dedication to academic excellence earned him a spot on the Dean’s List during both his first and second years. This accomplishment is even more inspiring given the challenges he faced during his second year, where he overcame adversity to maintain his academic success.
Empowered to Lead and Thrive
Through LEAF, James has developed vital skills and expanded his support system. The CED program provided opportunities to build his soft skills, including communication, leadership, and adaptability—tools essential for achieving his career goals. James’ volunteer work with LEAF further allowed him to grow as a leader while making meaningful contributions to his community.

James’ resilience stems from overcoming significant adversity. Growing up in a toxic environment, he endured trauma and tragedy but remained determined to create a better future for himself. By recognizing the importance of trust and support systems, James persevered and pursued higher education.
