LEAF Scholar Spotlight: Juan Sebastian Loaiza

Meet Juan Sebastian Loaiza, a standout participant in the 2024 LEAF Scholars Program. Currently in his second year at San Jose City College (SJCC), Juan Sebastian is a dedicated computer science major who has made significant strides both academically and personally. We first had the pleasure of meeting him at the STEM Core Bridge Celebration in Summer 2024, where his enthusiasm and commitment were immediately evident. As a Y1 LEAF Scholar, he exemplifies the spirit of determination and community engagement that the program seeks to nurture.

Role within LEAF: Juan Sebastian, as a Year 1 LEAF Scholar, has already made impressive contributions to the program. He completed LEAF’s Advocacy Program and has been actively involved with LEAF since before officially joining as a scholar last winter. His dedication is further showcased by his participation in the Career Exploration and Discovery (CED) Career Day at SAP Center, where he continued to build his professional network and explore career opportunities.

Achievements and Unique Qualities: Juan Sebastian's achievements are nothing short of remarkable. Notably, he completed SJCC’s STEM Core Summer Bridge Program right after transitioning from high school, which laid a strong foundation for his college journey. This summer, he secured a paid internship at Stanford University’s Nano Facilities Lab, an opportunity that will allow him to gain invaluable skills in understanding and working with micro and nano-scale technologies. His proactive approach and ability to secure such a prestigious internship highlight his commitment to learning and excellence.
